The Sweetest Valentine’s Day Round Up

Don’t tell anyone, but my feelings about Valentine’s Day have gone back and forth between loving it and not loving it so much over the years.

When I was a kid, I loved Valentine’s Day.  It meant decorating a shoe box with doily hearts and wrapping paper to collect Valentine’s at our party at school.  And, it meant my parents giving me a special heart-shaped box of chocolates with a sweet card.

When I was in high school, I didn’t like the holiday so much because I was never dating anyone special on February 14.  It became a day where my girlfriends and I commiserated over no boyfriend and no flowers.  Boo hoo!  lol

Now, I am back to loving the sweet holiday because I get to share my loving sentiments with the most special people closest to me…my husband and my kids.

It’s also fun because my daughter gets so excited and wants to decorate the whole house as if it were Christmas!

Today, I’m hoping to get you excited about Valentine’s Day with beautiful projects and crafts from some terrific blog friends of mine.

I’m happy to be a part of ‘The Sweetest Valentine Round Up” hosted by Kelly at My Soulful Home with you all!

The Sweetest Valentine Roundup includes sweet Valentine projects from fabulous bloggers!

Valentine’s Day Button Heart Art

Is it just me, or does everyone in the world have a jar full of old buttons?

When you buy a new blouse or a pair of pants, it comes with an extra button or two.  When I make something that requires buttons I always seem to end up with at least one or two leftover.  Where do they land?  In the button jar, of course!

Over the years, I’ve accumulated at least a few hundred.  Give or take.

Why can’t I just throw them out?  Do I really think I’m actually going to use them?

Seriously, who needs that many buttons hanging around?

You do, friends!  Because one day you’ll be surfing around on Pinterest or here, on my blog, and you’ll see a project like this or like this, or like this.

And you’ll be inspired to do something with all those buttons!

In fact, if you’re like me, you’ll be wishing you had even more buttons, more colors and more sizes so you can make bigger and better button art!

This Valentine’s Day button heart art was so, so easy.

In fact, I whipped this little jewel up in between three doorbell rings, dogs going berserk, my daughter getting hurt on her skateboard, a quick call to the doctor’s office, and a dose of antibiotic ointment.  Seriously.

It would have been a lot more enjoyable without all the mishaps and chaos, but it really was a very simple and quick project.

I used some leftover faux grain sack fabric I created for my no-sew grainsack ornaments  this past Christmas.  I cut it to size and I adhered it to a piece of 8 x 10 inch cardboard with Elmer’s Repositionable Mounting Spray Adhesive.

Then I used hot glue to affix the buttons on to the fabric in the shape of a heart, popped it all in to a frame and that was it! Easy!

My button heart art is part of a special blog tour featuring several of my blogging friends.

Why My Heart is at Home

Today, I’m excited to be sharing why my heart is at home as a part of a 14-blog tour:

hearts at home_300x300

14 bloggers are sharing their ideas about why their hearts are at home.

If you are visiting here for the very first time – thank you and welcome!  I am so glad you are here!

***

My parents were here visiting me last week and I had forgotten something.

My mom reminded me that she used to call me her little gypsy.  The name came from a new bike I received when I was about 8 or 9 years old.  It was called, “The Little Gypsy.”   She thought it was perfect because I always liked to be on the move going here and there.  I loved sleeping over at friend’s houses, I loved going to overnight camps, and, as I got older, I loved to travel.

In my twenties I took every opportunity I could afford to travel somewhere (which wasn’t nearly as much as I would have liked) and my first full-time job out of college took me a thousand miles away from home.

I saw life as an adventure, the world as a place to explore and if an exciting opportunity presented itself, I was wide open to moving far away.  My home was wherever I hung my proverbial hat.

I decorated and nested at every location but never firmly planted any roots.  I could literally move with a day’s notice.

Since getting married and having kids, however, I have settled down — even to the point that I would call myself a homebody.  I love being settled and spending time in my home.

I grew up living in the same house my entire life.  Maybe that’s why I was such an adventure seeker in my younger days.

And, maybe that’s why I feel the need to grow deep roots here, in my current house, for my children.  There is something solid and good about having the same friends, the same house and attending the same schools.

My husband and I have been in this house for almost 13 years.  Our kids know no other house and I really love that for them.

My husband, on the other hand, was an Air Force kid.  He moved all over the place until his family settled in Texas in middle school.

Now, with a family of my own, I am doing my best to create a home that “rises up to greet us” (quoting Oprah).

There is nothing like coming home from a vacation or a long day carting kids here and there to feel the “arms” of our home envelope us.  To see family photos, heirlooms, things we’ve gathered and collected and to just “be” in a place that feels like no other.

I can literally see the silent sigh of relief when my husband comes home from a long business trip.  Not only to familiar surroundings, but to familiar foods and smells.

And, because my kids love it so much, I enjoy adding touches for each holiday to our home.

Today, we have some hearts in our home for Valentine’s Day — a holiday for which I never used to decorate.

But, now, with the excited help of my kids, I decorate for every holiday — not just the biggies. (Read about my first Valentine’s Day mantel and the home-made bunting/banner here.)

Sometimes we make the decorations together, sometime the kids just help decide where the store-bought ones need to go.

To me, it’s all a part of creating a home that fits our entire family.

jute valentine heart wreath

This year, we added this simple jute/twine wrapped wreath to our decor.  It was so easy. (But it does take some time — you might want to watch Downton Abbey or another favorite show while you’re wrapping the wreath form.)

Easy Jute Twine Valentine Heart Wreath

Materials:
-Wire heart wreath form (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)
-Large roll of twine.

Directions:
-Secure one end of twine to the metal wreath form by tying a simple knot.  You can use a little hot glue to keep it secure if you like.
-Simply wrap the twine around the form in several layers (my wreath took about an hour).
-Finish the wreath by hot gluing the end of the twine to the back of the wreath.

Even after the Valentine decorations come down, my heart will always be in our home — even if we move to a new house in a new town, state or country we will always find a way to make it our refuge and a place we want to spend our time.  My heart truly is at home.

This week, I’m joining 13 other talented bloggers who are sharing why their hearts are at home.

I hope you will take the time to visit each one!

Valentine’s Day Mantel

This is the first year I’ve decorated my mantel for Valentine’s Day.

  Valentine's Day mantle ideas

My daughter (who is 8 years old today!) really wanted to decorate for the holiday this year.

And, since I’m now blogging…why not?!

It all started with the banner/bunting.

I saw one just like it on Holly Mathis’s blog and was inspired.

She bought hers on Etsy.

My daughter and I were looking at it together and decided we could make one!  She got so excited she got right to work.  We already had all the materials we needed at home.

We had it made within 30 minutes!

(She cut out all of the hearts herself!)

I also made a little fabric pillow heart with leftover fabric I already had.

Then, I found these cute little letters on sale at Hobby Lobby.  $4.00 for the pair.

I rummaged through some of my picture frames and discovered I already had this wooden, decoupaged red frame in my stash.

  LOVE printable picture

So, I surfed the Internet for a free printable and found this:

I found it here.

 And, it was done!

So simple and only $4 out of pocket — love that!

Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Birthday to my favorite little 8-year-old Valentine!
