Side Table Makeover {Rock Your Knock-off Tour}

I’ve been wanting to tackle this side table project for awhile but, quite honestly, I was nervous and a little scared to try it.

I was afraid it wouldn’t turn out and wouldn’t look good so I have been putting it off.

Then a few of my blogging friends started talking about putting together another Rock Your Knock-off tour — you know the one…the one where we all make our own version of something we love.

DIY Wooden Joy Sign {Easy Image Transfer Method}

When you finish a renovation project, you are often left with some leftover pieces and parts that no longer have a home or a purpose.  Some of it gets trashed and others get donated.  For me, our leftover cabinet doors and drawer fronts from our kitchen renovation this summer are set aside in the garage so I can give them each a makeover/up-cycle one at a time.

A few weeks ago, I made over two cabinet fronts and turned them in to chalk boards.

Today, I up-cycled a small cabinet door and turned it in to a wooden Joy sign for this year’s holiday decor.

I love the pop of red and the vintage look of this little sign!

This was such a simple project and I used my easy image transfer method that I often use for my chalk boards to create the word “Joy” so it’s a project anyone can tackle.  More on the transfer method in a minute.  First, let me explain the overall project.

I began by painting the frame of the cabinet door using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Emperor’s Silk.  The interior of the frame is painted with ASCP Old White.  I used green craft paint for the lettering and the square outline.  When it was all painted I lightly sanded with a fine grit sand paper to distress and antique the piece.  I didn’t go crazy with this step, just a light sanding was good enough for me.  Finally, I finished the sign with one coat of Annie Sloan clear wax and then a top coat of AS dark wax to give it an antiqued appearance.

Now, here’s the part that makes many of us nervous — hand lettering.  Specifically, hand lettering using paint!

Easy Image Transfer Technique:

1.  I typed out the word “joy” in a font that I liked and printed it on my printer.  Here’s a printable version of the word,  Joy that I used.

2.  I turned over the sheet of paper and colored over the back of the letters using colored chalk (I used a color so when it is transferred on to the board it will be easier to see.)

3.  Turn the paper over and center the word on your board.  Then firmly outline the letters using pen or pencil so the chalk will transfer on to the board.

4.  Using craft paint and a small tipped paint brush outline and fill in the letters with paint.

That’s it!  It’s so easy.  Creating this with a distressed finish makes it so forgiving, so even if you don’t have a steady hand with a paint brush your finished piece looks old and authentic.

I love how this turned out and I think it’s perfect for a pop of color in my kitchen this holiday.

19 Chalk Paint Projects

If I had more storage space and room to work, I would buy lots old furniture in need of some love and restore it.

I have a semi-secret love of painting furniture.

I love taking something that is looking neglected and unloved and making it new again.  It’s so much fun!

I have at least two more projects waiting to be painted with my favorite — chalk paint.  I love working with it.  I wrote a post about it here.

(I have only used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint but I know there are other chalky-type paint mediums out there — including making your own.)

During this busy holiday season I’m hoping to squeeze both of my painting projects in before I host family for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In the meantime, I’m gathering some chalk paint inspiration in one of my favorite places to be inspired – Hometalk.

What I love about this clip board is that I’ve included chalk paint projects that even include fabric!  Yes, fabric!  One of these days I’m going to tackle painting fabric with chalk paint.

Are you familiar with Hometalk?  It’s a great social media site where you can post your own projects, browse others, comment and get feedback.  It’s a place for home enthusiasts just like me.

You can create clip boards of the favorite things you find while browsing on Hometalk.

My latest clipboard…Chalk Paint Projects, of course!

Do you have any projects in your home you’re planning to get done before guests arrive this holiday season?

Or am I a little crazy trying to get it all done?

On a different note, I’m sharing my pecan pie recipe over at All Things Heart and Home today.

Favorite DIY Projects of 2013

Christmas is over and I’m itching to get started on some new projects.  But, first, I wanted to go back to see a little of what I accomplished in 2013.

favorite projects 2013

Here’s a quick re-cap of some of my favorite makeovers and projects this past year:

1.  Tween Girl’s Room Makeover:

tween room reveal2

My daughter and I worked on this room together — she had a lot of ideas and her own, unique style.  We took our time getting this room together and we both love the results.

We painted the walls a pale lavender, made a lot of the wall art and other details ourselves and decorated a lamp shade with ribbon.  We had a lot of fun!

I have to confess, we have updated her room slightly since this reveal — we got her a new twin bed with a trundle this fall and she added a couple of posters of the band, One Direction.  As with the initial makeover, we have worked together to make it all fit and work together.  It’s so cute!  I haven’t shared the updates yet on the blog but I will soon!

 2.  Dining Room Re-do

dining room_2

Without question, this room is my favorite in our whole house!  And, like most of my room re-do’s, my dining room came together slowly with a lot of DIY projects — the chairs, the china hutch and the grandfather clock.

The time and effort was totally worth it.  The room reflects so much of my personality without leaving out my husband’s taste and I love that about it!

3. Library Chair Makeover

library chair

Who knew such a small and impromptu project would make me so happy?!

This chair was sitting in my attic getting dry and dusty.  On a whim, I decided to bring it in to my foyer to change things up a little.  With a little Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and a new cushion and pillow I made myself, it turned into a cute little piece that is pretty and functional!

4.  Master Bedroom Update

master bedroom peek wm

I didn’t do a lot to update our master bedroom this year…just a two new pillow shams and a couple of little decorative pieces to freshen it up a little.  It’s amazing how just a few simple touches can make a space feel new, isn’t it?!

5.  Organizing My Master Closet

organize your closet

Even more than a well-decorated space, I love an organized space.

Embarrassingly, I had really let my master closet get out of control.  One of the pitfalls of having a large space (and not a lot of storage space) is that it becomes a dropping zone and a great place to hide things when company comes.

I purged and cleaned and got my space looking and feeling great.  And, even if you have a small closet that isn’t a walk-in, you can still use my organizing  principles to create a great, clutter-free space of your own!

*****

As usual, I’ve got a long list of organizing, DIY and makeover projects on my list for this year and I’ll be sharing it with you soon.

Thank you so much for reading this blog, taking the time to comment and for allowing me to get to know you.  This blog has been such a blessing to me in so many ways and I am grateful to be able to come here each week and share my love of all things home!

Happy New Year!

Julie

15+ Fabulous Furniture Projects

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season!

I had all of these grand plans to blog over the holiday, but it has been so busy!  I’ve been relaxing, planning projects and trying to get organized.

My Christmas decor is still up and it will be until the New Year.  I might even share a few more pictures of it because I got some fun new photography gadgets for Christmas that I’m dying to try out.  Plus, if you follow me on Instagram, you know the lights on our pre-lit, fake tree died a few days before Christmas and we replaced it with a gorgeous real tree.  I am in love with it!! I could keep it up forever!

That said, I really am excited for the new year and beginning new projects at home.

Today, I’m teaming up with a few blogger friends to bring you some great past projects — my favorite kind — the ones that pack a big punch for a little effort and a few bucks.

Painting furniture and accessories is such a wonderful way to give new life to items that you are maybe not so excited about anymore or something you found at a yard sale for a smoking price.

Enjoy and be inspired by 15+ Awesome Furniture Painting Projects You Can Do!
