Perfect Linens Sheets and a Discount

If there is one thing I love and value, it’s a good night’s rest.  I love a super comfy bed, fluffy down covers and soft cotton sheets so I can get my beauty rest.  My husband jokingly tells me I’m like the princess and the pea.  He says that, just like the story, I could feel a pebble under the mattress and it would ruin my entire night.  Ha!  Of course, I laugh when he says it, but I have to admit he’s actually spot on.  I am a bit of a princess about my sleep and, in particular, the feel of my bed.

Favorite DIY Projects of 2013

Christmas is over and I’m itching to get started on some new projects.  But, first, I wanted to go back to see a little of what I accomplished in 2013.

favorite projects 2013

Here’s a quick re-cap of some of my favorite makeovers and projects this past year:

1.  Tween Girl’s Room Makeover:

My daughter and I worked on this room together — she had a lot of ideas and her own, unique style.  We took our time getting this room together and we both love the results.

We painted the walls a pale lavender, made a lot of the wall art and other details ourselves and decorated a lamp shade with ribbon.  We had a lot of fun!

I have to confess, we have updated her room slightly since this reveal — we got her a new twin bed with a trundle this fall and she added a couple of posters of the band, One Direction.  As with the initial makeover, we have worked together to make it all fit and work together.  It’s so cute!  I haven’t shared the updates yet on the blog but I will soon!

 2.  Dining Room Re-do

Without question, this room is my favorite in our whole house!  And, like most of my room re-do’s, my dining room came together slowly with a lot of DIY projects — the chairs, the china hutch and the grandfather clock.

The time and effort was totally worth it.  The room reflects so much of my personality without leaving out my husband’s taste and I love that about it!

3. Library Chair Makeover

Who knew such a small and impromptu project would make me so happy?!

This chair was sitting in my attic getting dry and dusty.  On a whim, I decided to bring it in to my foyer to change things up a little.  With a little Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and a new cushion and pillow I made myself, it turned into a cute little piece that is pretty and functional!

4.  Master Bedroom Update

I didn’t do a lot to update our master bedroom this year…just a two new pillow shams and a couple of little decorative pieces to freshen it up a little.  It’s amazing how just a few simple touches can make a space feel new, isn’t it?!

5.  Organizing My Master Closet

organize your closet

Even more than a well-decorated space, I love an organized space.

Embarrassingly, I had really let my master closet get out of control.  One of the pitfalls of having a large space (and not a lot of storage space) is that it becomes a dropping zone and a great place to hide things when company comes.

I purged and cleaned and got my space looking and feeling great.  And, even if you have a small closet that isn’t a walk-in, you can still use my organizing  principles to create a great, clutter-free space of your own!

*****

As usual, I’ve got a long list of organizing, DIY and makeover projects on my list for this year and I’ll be sharing it with you soon.

Thank you so much for reading this blog, taking the time to comment and for allowing me to get to know you.  This blog has been such a blessing to me in so many ways and I am grateful to be able to come here each week and share my love of all things home!

Happy New Year!

Julie

Master Bedroom Update

I love a comfy, peaceful and beautiful master bedroom.

Problem is, I’ve struggled for years trying to make mine all those things.

After going back and forth for several months with all kinds of master bedroom re-do plans (see those posts here and here), I finally settled — for now — with a fresher look.

Before, my room had a lot of dark browns mixed with ivory and black.

I was trying really hard to mix my husband’s very masculine taste with my own love for things light and bright.

(I copied some elements from a Ralph Lauren bedroom I saw back when I was choosing fabrics.)

It worked for awhile, but truthfully, there was just too much brown for my taste.

So, it was time to freshen things up and give the room a brighter look.
I didn’t change a lot.

And, to tell you the truth, I’m not completely done in here.

But, I’m happy for now and decorating is like life.  It’s a process.

The new euro shams are from Pottery Barn.

So is the blue throw on the leather chair (the chair used to be in our living room).
I added a little buffalo check pillow (made from leftover dining room chair fabric).

And, I made some new pictures for my skinny little wall.  The frames are from Target and the pictures are taken by me at a nearby ranchette where longhorns and baby calves roam.

I added some more feminine touches, too. (To my night stand, of course!)
(Excuse the wrinkles on my tissue box cover…I hate to iron!)

I’m thinking about painting the frames on my tin tiles, and possible re-painting my night stand,
but I’m not in a hurry.

No complaints from my husband on the new look.  It’s a little surprising since he generally isn’t a fan of light blue.  But, I think I’ve kept enough masculine things to keep him happy.

Okay…there’s a lot of feminine touches but let’s face it…he’s usually sleeping in this room.  And, I did throw in a cowhide.  I know how to keep my man happy!
Thanks so much for stopping by today!

Changing My Mind {Master Bedroom}

Do you change your mind a million times when you’re re-decorating or updating a room?  It seems like I do.

It’s happening with my master bedroom update.  I’m wavering all over the place.  One minute, I’m sticking to the plan I originally drew up, and the next I’m doing a complete 180.

If you read the post with my inspiration board, you’ll know that I ordered these two Neena euro shams from Pottery Barn.

Well, they came in, but when I put them on my bed I wasn’t as in love with them as I was when I saw them online.  The colors are more turquoise than blue (which isn’t necessarily bad) and, for some reason, they didn’t have the same allure to me once I got them home and put them on my bed. At nearly $60 a piece, that’s not good enough. For that price, I have to be totally in love.  Know what I mean?

I’ve searched bedding and fabrics and have come up with a zillion different plans since then.

I looked at fabrics that use a deeper blue and even considered using bold reds, while throwing in a pop of yellow in kind of a Sarah Richardson-vintage-quilt-at-the-end-of-the-bed kind of fashion.

(I love how Sarah uses stunning quilts at the end of her beds! — see below)

LOVE!!

But, when I got the fabric samples home and mixed and matched, things just didn’t come together or wow me.

I stopped at Pottery Barn with my mom yesterday (they were in town for a short visit!) and took home these two Charlie Paisley pillow shams for a trial run:

They really make the room look fresh.

I’m thinking I might keep them and maybe add a little gingham at the end of the bed.  Like a new duvet cover for the down comforter we keep at the end of the bed.  Ikea has this cute one:

Here’s my idea board:

After I came up with the board, I saw this over at Holly’s blog:

Holly Mathis

She’s using the Charlie paisley in brown (which is no longer available) with gingham – LOVE!!  Could I just have this bedroom please?!  It is SO cute and comfy!  And, look at those cute side tables!

So, I might be on the right track.  I’ll keep you posted as to what comes of my indecision.

Have a great Tuesday!
