Fall Burlap Art
This past spring, I discovered stretched burlap canvases. They’re just like a regular canvas that you paint on except that they’re made of burlap. They are great for all kinds of crafts.
Now that it’s fall, I thought I’d try my hand at some fall burlap art:
If you can draw or trace the shape of a pumpkin, you can do this easy fall craft. It doesn’t require a huge amount of art skills…I promise!
The trick to giving the pumpkin some depth is to use 3-4 colors of orange and 2 colors of brown. It makes a big difference!
Supplies:
- burlap canvas
- embellishments (faux floral, raffia, nail heads)
- glue gun
- craft paint and paint brushes
Directions:
- using a pencil, draw free-hand or copy an outline of a pumpkin on to the canvas
- fill in the outline with various colors of orange paint – use sweeping broad strokes to outline the “ridges” of the pumpkin
- use a little brown paint to help define the ridges of the pumpkin — blend your paints together using the same brush for all the colors so the lines don’t come out too harsh (don’t over think this…just use broad brush strokes in a half-moon motion and add paint as needed — feel free to layer and just paint over what you don’t like)
- add a stem with brown paint. I used 2 different browns to give the stem a little more depth
- hot glue on the faux floral and raffia
- add nail heads to the sides of the canvas measuring an equal distance in between
The beauty of this kind of painting is that you really can’t go wrong. If the pumpkin is too orange, add some brown or reddish orange. If it’s too flat looking add more curved strokes of paint with some brown mixed with a darker orange. Experiment! The more you mix it up the better it looks!
Hint: I used about 4 different colors of orange ranging from light orange, pumpkin orange and reddish orange. I also used 2 different colors of brown. Use the same brush for each color — let the colors mix and blend.
My first try looked a little flat to me when I was finished:
I wanted it to have more depth, so even after the embellishments were on I decided to add some brown to give it more definition.
Better, don’t you think?
Don’t be afraid to give it a try. It really is fun!
I’ll be back tonight at 8 p.m. Central with another project and the Best of DIY link party.
Hope to see you then!

Apple Pumpkin Muffins Recipe
I love recipes that are easy, delicious and freeze well – especially around the holidays.
When you have family coming in for Thanksgiving or Christmas, or if you just want a special treat in the morning and you don’t want to fuss, then these Apple Pumpkin Muffins are just the ticket for making ahead and freezing to serve when needed.
Of course, eating them fresh out of the oven is absolutely divine but, we all know that having something ready to go when things get busy is a sanity-saver – especially when you’re already destined for a full day in the kitchen.
Not only are these delicious, but they’re a great breakfast, brunch or snacking treat to make whenever you have leftover canned pumpkin (which happens to me after I make my banana pumpkin bread).
I’d love to tell you that I came up with this recipe on my own or that it’s been handed down generation after generation, but like many of my best recipes, it was discovered, tried and now cherished.
I like to share them on this blog in the same way I would to pass them on to a friend. After all, aren’t we all looking for great recipes?
I will always give credit where it is due if the recipe did not come from me. In this case, I would love to provide the online source where I got it from. I promise, I tried to get the original link to where I got these, but try as I might, I could not find it. So, I’m just going to tell you where it came from: the Good Morning Texas program on WFAA-TV. One of the anchors, Amy Vanderoef, shares many of her family recipes on the show and this one is a keeper. So, Amy, if you ever read this post, please send me the link!

- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 T. pumpkin pie spice
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 cup canned pumpkin
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 cups chopped apples
For topping
- 2 T flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 4 tsp. butter (room temp)
Instructions
- Combine eggs, pumpkin and oil
- Blend all dry ingredients in
- Stir in apples
- Sprinkle topping over muffins and bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes
Notes
- I chop my apples very small because my kids don't like the big bits of apple in the muffin, but the larger chunks are delicious as well.

Fall Favorites Friday {Best Ever Banana Pumpkin Bread Recipe}
Nothing says fall quite like the flavor of pumpkin. In my family, my Banana Pumpkin Bread recipe is one of their favorites.
I found it several years ago in the church cookbook from the Lutheran church in which I grew up. It has been a hit from our first hello.
It makes two or three 9 x 5 inch loaves and they don’t last long at my house (I always make three). I often keep two and give one away. I can’t say enough about how much we love this recipe!
Here it is:
3 c. sugar
1 c. oil
4 eggs
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
2 tsp. soda
3 1/2 c. flour
2/3 c. water
1 c. pumpkin
1 c. mashed bananas
1/2 cup nuts (optional) — I think pecans would be outstanding in this recipe!
Combine sugar, oil; add eggs. Beat until well-blended. Combine dry ingredients. Add alternating with water. Mix well. Add pumpkin, banana and nuts. Bake at 350 degrees (Fahrenheit) for 50 minutes in 2 or 3 (9 x 5 inch) pans.
**Note: I have always made three loaves by filling each pan 1/2 full. I have also discovered that baking in a glass pan works best. I have 2 glass pans and one non-stick metal pan. The glass ones always come out the best. (This doesn’t mean it will be a complete disaster when baked in a metal pan, I have just found that the loaves are cooked most evenly in a glass pan.)

Let me know if you try this recipe. I’d love to hear what you think!
Happy Baking!
