One Room Challenge – Week 4

Participating in the One Room Challenge has no doubt kept me on task.  But, when I think about posting each week to keep you all updated on my progress, the work I’ve done seems kind of boring.  However, plodding along through some of the boring stuff is necessary to get to the good stuff.

This past week, I finished going through some of the things that were stored in the room, I sold the desks and shelves on Craig’s list, I took things off the walls, and chose a paint color.

I also ordered the carpet, scheduled the install for this coming Monday, and — here’s the fun part — I bought some of the decor for the room.

The pillows I wanted from Target were on sale (woo hoo!) and so were some baskets for storing things.  I bought a new curtain rod and some stuff for creating a collage wall.

I also pinned some new inspiration to my Spare Room Pinterest board to help me flesh out the details of the room.

As it happens, a few things have changed a little from my original plan.

This fabric, that I was thinking of using to make curtains for the room, is on back order until June.

I haven’t decided if I’m going to wait or if I’ll just go with some inexpensive linen-look curtains from IKEA.   Do I go with inexpensive and quick?  Or do I wait for this fabric I love, but will require me to make them myself and will cost quite a bit more?  Decisions, decisions!

The other change from my original plan is the media cabinet.

I had originally thought this cabinet from IKEA would be a good storage piece, but it doesn’t look like they are carrying it any more.

In addition, my husband bought a million stereo components, so the three shelves probably weren’t enough.  And, he wants more air flow around the components so things don’t over heat.

Last week, I mentioned that we thought we would build something ourselves using plumbing pipes and stained wood.

When I was browsing around on the Internet, I stumbled on this piece from Overstock:

It meets my husband’s requirements, it is the right look for the room and it’s only $271.00.  Not as inexpensive as making it ourselves, but definitely nice for the budget all the same.

I’m going to paint the room today.  Once the carpet gets installed on Monday the room will really start taking shape!

    Hi Julie ~
I would wait for the fabric you like, because you have so much to do now, so when the material comes in you will be finished with your room, and you can take your time with your curtains.
In past experiences I have regretted not waiting for what I really wanted.
    Good luck.
    Rose

Good advice, Rose. I have a tendency to not only get impatient, but get swayed by a lower price too. But, you’re right…it’s usually best to wait for what you really want! :)

What color did you choose for your walls? Everything will look wonderful, as does everything that you do. Your home is a real inspiration for me.

  3. Your room is becoming quite the inspiration. Looking forward to each post. fondly ~lynne~

I think I would wait for the fabric if you love it that much. I’m impatient, so I usually go for whatever is cheap/available and I usually end up regretting it and spending more money to replace it later. I love that piece from Overstock! Good luck with the last 2 weeks!

You would be sorry if you went with the less expensive Ikea curtains…it’ll be better to wait for something you really, really like!♥ the gorgeous blue and white pillow.

I really like the media shelving. Sounds like you had a wonderful week of shopping. That coming up this week for me- it’s so much more fun than painting. Have a great week!

  7. Mary says:

First…you should wait & get the fabric you love.
Second…since the Overstock shelving has an open back, all your cords will show. Not a good look. You might want to consider something else.

    • Julie Julie says:

Thanks for the advice! I definitely considered the cord dilemma — my husband always prefers open shelving and since this space is catering to him the most I decided to go with the open look but I do have a cord solution in mind. It will require a small amount of DIY and I will definitely be posting about it!!

Have you seen the Hyllis hack: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2014/11/hyllis-all-the-way.html#kgxeuWQ6e8w0HU1G.99
It has the same look… Good luck

Oh wow! I just took a look at your link and those shelves look amazing! There are so many creative and handy people who can turn anything in to something great. Thanks for sharing!

Hi. Love the design you have planned for your “Grown Up” space. I know you said your husband wants something more open than the Ikea TV stand and you think they no longer sell it anyway, I did want to let you know that Wal-mart is selling one that is VERY similar right now in their Better Homes & Gardens line of furniture, you know in case the one from Overstock doesn’t pan out. It is reasonably priced too and is really nice looking. I have seen one in person at my local supercenter. Can’t wait to see your room once you are finished. Good luck!
