Burlap Canvas / Hometalk & Michaels Pinterest Party

I don’t know about you, but I am dying for spring to arrive.

Today, I created my own little piece of spring with this super easy burlap canvas craft.

It was sooo easy to make and it only took me about 30 minutes (details on the craft later).

My little spring-inspired burlap canvas is a part of a super-fun event sponsored by Michaels and Hometalk.

This Sunday, Feb. 16, I will be making my burlap canvas project at the Pinterest Party at the Michaels located in Keller, TX (2005 S. Main St.) from 1 – 4 p.m.  If you live nearby, I hope you’ll come and craft with me!

If you’d like to come but don’t live nearby, no worries! 100 bloggers are participating in the nationwide Pinterest Party so you might find a party near you (there are even four Michaels stores in Canada that are taking part). Check this list to find your nearest participating Michaels location.

I hope you’ll meet us in the class room to make your own pin-worthy project.  Oh, and did I mention that you can win a $100 Michaels gift card?  Just follow Michaels on Hometalk for your chance to win!

If you’ve never heard of Hometalk, you need to check it out!  Hometalk is a home and garden social network for anyone who loves all things home.  It’s a fun place to hang out, get inspiration, ask questions and get them answered, etc.  You can follow me there, too!

So…back to the burlap canvas I created.  Here’s what I used from Michaels to make my project:

craft supplies

                  • stretched burlap canvas
                  • letter stencils
                  • craft paint
                  • burlap ribbon
                  • silk flowers
                  • button
                  • wooden bird
                  • hot glue

I love how it turned out!

And, it was simple and easy.

If you can trace a bird, use a stencil and handle a hot glue gun, you can do this!

silk flowers

Directions:
Step 1:
Use stencils, craft paint and a foam pouncer to paint on the words. I didn’t measure or anything…I just winged it as I went along.
Step 2:
Find a shape — like a bird, bunny, flower, etc. and trace it with a pencil on to the canvas.  Using craft paint, paint inside the lines.
Step 3:
Make a bow with the burlap ribbon and hot glue it to the top of the canvas.
Step 4.
Cut the heads off of some silk flowers and hot glue them in and around the bow.
You’re done!

Now, bring on Spring!!!

Hope to see you at Michaels!

Oh…and by the way, all of the participating bloggers and I will be posting our projects in a special link-up for you to see at the end of this week.  I can’t wait to share them with you.  I’m telling you, they are spectacular and you won’t want to miss them.

Thanks for reading!

Zinc Sap Collecting Cups: Hometalk Round Top Flip

A few weeks ago someTexas bloggers and I met in Round Top, Texas for the Round Top Antiques fair to socialize and shop for fun finds we could up-cycle or “flip.”   Among other things, I found these awesome little zinc sap collecting cups:

3 ways to use zinc sap cups

As soon as I saw them, I knew they had to be mine .  So much so in fact, I didn’t even notice the ginormous stuffed buffalo head hovering within inches above my head!  (I wish I had a picture of that big buffalo and my reaction!)  The best part?  Each cup was only $1.50!

Just as the name implies, these cute zinc cups were originally used to collect sap.

I am currently using them in three different ways (but I have a few other holiday ideas for them that I will be sharing throughout the season.)

1.  Desk and School  Supply Storage:

I love using old stuff for storage.  These little cups could not only hold pencils, but they could hold paper clips, rubber bands, scissors, you name it!

2. Vase

I know this is a no-brainer, but I still love a vintage vases for garden cuttings.  It just makes a simple arrangement so special don’t you think?

3.  Votive Holder

A pretty tablescape needs candles and something simple and vintage adds an extra dimension.

I absolutely adore how these cups look on my fall table.  (I’ll be sharing this table display with a “how-to” soon!)

I found so many cool things at Round Top, I shared some of them here.  I’ll be posting more uses for my zinc sap collecting cups soon as well as some other up-cycle projects that I intend to use for the holidays.

Have you found any great up-cycled finds lately?

Thanks so much for reading today!

Hometalk Benefit for Shelter Animals Kick-off

I love animals and I love a thrifty DIY project.  So, what better way to marry the two with a blog tour benefiting shelter animals?

All week long DIY and home bloggers will be posting about projects they’ve created from thrift store finds (the thrift store they shopped at gives proceeds to local animal shelters) or they’ll be sharing stories about their own adopted pets and how you can help animals in your area.

Our friends at Hometalk love animals as much as we do and are sponsoring this event.  We’ll be posting all of our projects on Hometalk at the end of the tour to help raise awareness to our cause.  (Visit the Hometalk website to learn more about this awesome site.  Go here, to find Lilacs & Longhorns on Hometalk.)

Leading off the tour this week is Country Design Style:

Vintage Finds: Hometalk Round Top Blogger Meet-up

I’m still recovering from my busy weekend in Round Top, Texas.

And,  let me tell you, I’ve found a new love.  There are all kinds of vintage and re-purposed things to discover!

(Forgive the grainy iPhone pictures!)

There were so many cool things at the Antiques Fair that, to tell you the truth, I was a little overwhelmed!

Of course, my phone died shortly after I got there so I didn’t take a lot of shopping pictures, but just envision tent after tent after tent filled with junk, antiques, olive buckets (for $35!), baskets, re-purposed cool stuff — you name it.  It was a home blogger’s paradise.

Except for the unrelenting heat.

That wasn’t so great.

Even so, we trudged on in search of fabulous finds and it was worth every drop of sweat.

Here’s a peak a sneak peek of two finds that made me happy:

I scored two vintage table cloths for $5 each!

And, this tattered wedding ring quilt circa 1940 for $20.

Here’s a sneak peek at how I used the quilts shortly after I brought it home:

blue and white table scape

I have always wanted an old quilt to throw over a table for a tablescape!

I found even more fun finds that I will be sharing with you soon.

My weekend was all a part of the Hometalk Round Top Blogger Meetup that Randi from Dukes & Duchesses and I co-hosted.

Don’t you love the cute bags Hometalk gave us? (Mine got a little dirty sitting in my shopping cart.)

We had a small, but enthusiastic group of bloggers (as well as a few friends and kids) join Randi and me on our shopping adventure (Denise from Denise Designed and Lisa from The Pennington Point).  We didn’t manage to connect with a few others who were scheduled to join us, so I hope they made it to the fair and enjoyed all the great shopping anyway. (I’m so disappointed I didn’t get to meet them!  Next time ladies, next time!)

We will all be posting about our finds and how we re-purpose or “flip” them into something fantastic for our homes, so stay tuned!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend!
