Tips for Re-Upholstering Dining Chairs

When I go shopping I’m that crazy person who is constantly saying to herself, “I can make that,” or “I can do that myself.”

That was the case with my dining chairs.

I had long been admiring fully upholstered chairs but I couldn’t stomach the $400 + per chair price tag that I saw at many stores.

Table and chairs at the Wisteria store in Dallas

So, when I found my mint condition $450 table and chairs set on Craig’s list I didn’t hesitate when the fabric color was not my cup of tea.  That little voice in my head piped up, “I can reupholster them myself!”

And, yes, I could.  But. I’m not going to lie…it took more time and fortitude than I had anticipated because I did several chairs instead of just one or two.

If you’re like me and want to reupholster your own dining chairs, here are a few tips I have learned along the way:

Buy the correct amount of fabric yardage for your project by consulting an upholstery guide

Save the old fabric after removing to use as a guide for cutting.

Invest in a good staple remover I bought mine from a local upholstery supply company.  You can find one near you by Googling “upholstery supply” or you can order one online.  Mine is exactly like this one and cost about $15.

Carefully consider how you want your fabric pattern to present itself on the chair and then be consistent and carefully match the pattern as best you can.  Do it the same way for every chair for a consistent look.

Buy a good staple gun.  It doesn’t have to cost a fortune but it shouldn’t be the cheapest one you can find.  A good one is easy to hold and “shoot.”

(Mine is just like this one and is available at Amazon.com)

Pay attention to staple size.  The staples not only need to fit your gun, but look at the depth of the staple.  For example, if you’re using heavy fabric and are going through several layers, you need a longer staple.  You can see what I mean in the picture below.  The blue guide shows you different staple lengths.

Be patient and remember it’s okay to re-do something if you have to.

I will go into greater detail and will post a step-by-step tutorial in the next few days so you can see how I upholstered them.  It really isn’t rocket science, but it does require some patience and attention to detail.

With some perseverance and a little muscle, I know you can do it to!

Thank you, again, for all your wonderful comments on my dining room!  I am so overwhelmed by the compliments and kind remarks I received. And, thank you, to all of you who came here from my guest post at Savvy Southern Style.  I hope to get to know you all better!

My Favorite Room Guest Post at Savvy Southern Style {And a Few Questions Answered}

Happy Friday y’all!

First, thank you so much for all your fantastic and uplifting comments about my dining room.  I am honored that so many of you liked my room as much as I do.

Second, I am so excited that today, Miss Kim over at Savvy Southern Style, has invited me to share My Favorite Room over at her beautiful blog!  I have loved her blog for ages, so I am beyond thrilled that she invited me to write a post about a room in my home!  I share even more details about my dining room and the changes I’ve made in my guest post today, so be sure to hop on over to Savvy Southern Style to take a look.

Finally, I want to answer a couple of questions that came up about my room:

Wall paint color:  Weekend in the Country (don’t you love that name?) by Valspar (Lowe’s).  However, I had it color-matched at Home Depot in their Behr Premium Plus paint.  It was just a personal thing.  I really love the Behr PP paint…it has such great coverage and I was painting over a dark faux finish and I didn’t want to do a million coats.

Chair Fabric:  Checkmate in Acorn – Calico Corners

Slipcover Fabric:  I don’t know the name of it.  It’s an upholstery linen fabric I bought at a local discount interior fabric store in Hurst, TX called, Home Fabrics.

Pillow Fabric:  John Robshaw’s Mani Indigo ordered from House Fabric.

I will sharing a tutorial on how I reupholstered the checked chairs and the slipcovers soon so please check back.

That’s it for now.  Thank you, again, for all of the great comments and don’t forget to go to Savvy Southern Style today to check out my guest post!

My Dining Room — The Big Reveal!!

Well, it’s been months in the making and, truthfully, I’ve had it mostly done for quite awhile now.  The hold-up?  DIYing the chairs.  Six chairs.  They almost got the better of me, but I’m happy and proud to say it’s DONE!

I was going to drag out the reveal…give it to you piece by piece and then, BAM!  Give you the final reveal.  But, I’m so happy it’s done I’m just doing it all in one post and then I’ll do some how-to posts and tell you where I bought stuff.

As you may recall, this was the mood board I created to give myself a road map.

I didn’t change out the chandelier as I had hoped, frankly, because of budget.  Plus, my hubby likes the current chandelier.  And, to be honest, the old chandelier actually looks better now with the new changes.

It’s still not my favorite though, and I really would like to a lantern or something prettier, but it will have to wait.  Rome was not built in a day…or even a few months.

For now, I’m happy as a clam to have this makeover done and the chairs finished – yippee!!

So, there you have it.

I am checking this room off my to-do list!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Easy Furniture Transformation {Adding Legs}

Remember my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Old Violet china hutch I fixed up last year?

I bought it on Craig’s List almost a year ago and transformed it from dark-stained and dull to this blue beauty.

Before I bought it, I knew that the width and depth were perfect for my space, but I also knew that it was lacking a little on height.  That fact didn’t stop me because I knew I could fix it and I finally got around  to it this weekend.

I added these cute little 4-inch high bun feet and I absolutely love how it turned out!

It was really easy.  In fact, I did it all by myself — well, I had a tiny bit of help from Mr. Longhorn.

I only have one picture of the process because my camera battery died mid-project, so I’ll do my best to describe it for you.

It’s so easy, I think you can manage to follow along without pictures.

First, my husband helped me lay the piece down on the ground and I inspected the underside to see what I had to work with.

The four corners had 2 x 2 square wood pieces that had furniture “pads” (what are they called?) on the bottom.  I removed those and measured how much space I’d have to work with.

Then, I went to the hardware store and bought the 4″ bun feet I had been admiring for the piece.  They were $6.98 a piece.  When I got home, my husband told me that I would need something called a “tee nut” to secure and screw the legs in to. (Yes, after.  So back to the store I went.)

A “tee nut” looks like this:

He told me that they’re usually used on the top of a piece instead of the bottom, but since we’re not moving the hutch all over the place it should be just fine.

So, I drilled a hole into the bottom of the wood support and hammered the tee nut into place.

Here’s my one and only picture I took on my phone and posted on Instagram:

It’s off-center because my bun fee are kinda wide.

Once I had the tee nuts in place, I painted the feet to match my piece and screwed them into the tee nut.  Super easy!

I love it!

As a reminder, here’s what it looked like before I installed the legs:

And, again, after!

(Sorry for the terrible glare on the cabinet doors. )

My dining room is really coming together!  I just have to finish upholstering my chairs and I’ll be ready to show it off!

Thanks for stopping by today!

Dining Room Sneak Peek

I’ve been working like crazy trying to get a few projects done around the house and, by far, the most exciting one right now is the work that’s happening in my dining room.

Remember this idea board I recently shared in a post about my love for gingham and checked fabrics?

Well, I’m now working feverishly to turn this room into a reality!

I just LOVE this fabric that is draped over my wing chair!

It’s “Mani Indigo” by John Robshaw and I ordered it from House Fabric.

I originally wanted to use it for drapes (which would be totally fabulous, by the way) but two things prevented me from going that route — 1) The cost for fabric and drapery hardware and 2) my husband hates drapes.  Those two negatives made it a no-go.  If it had been cheaper, then I could make my case a little better for putting up drapes he doesn’t like.  Ha!

So, long story short…I’m going with pillows to go on the two identical wing chairs I have flanking my sideboard.  I know the scale of the pattern is large, but I think it will still work.

After the John Robshaw fabric came in, my chair fabric arrived.  I promptly started taking apart a chair and now have ONE chair finished…only 5 to go!  (I don’t know whether to say “Woo Hoo or Oh Crap!  lol).

I really, really love it!  I hope six chairs in buffalo check won’t freak my husband out!  Even in the brown, it is still a little feminine.

And, I hope the plate wall I’m putting together isn’t too girly for him, either.

Not to worry, though.

I’ve got some more manly stuff up my sleeve to balance things out.

I was thinking this guy might be nice…

We just won’t serve beef in this room – ha!
I still have a lot of work to do.  Re-upholstering the chairs is going to be the death of me, I think.  There are SO MANY staples to remove!!  Whoever upholstered these the first time around did not skimp on the staples.  My fingers are sore.
I’ll keep you updated with my progress.
Happy Tuesday, everyone!
