Powder Bath Makeover – Kind Of

Do you have a room in your house that never really feels quite right to you?

For me, it is my powder bath.

It seems like it would be the easiest room in the house to decorate since it’s so small.  I mean, what’s there to decorate, right?  It’s a toilet and a sink.  Simple, simple.

Wrong.

It’s a window-less room that, for some reason, has taunted me for the entire 12 years we have lived in this house!

It has been painted 3 different colors and I didn’t really like any of them.

Here’s what it looked like at Christmas:

It was the same color as the walls in our foyer but it didn’t look the same at all and it was just “bleh” to me.

(Please forgive the poor lighting and picture quality.
As I mentioned, this room has no windows and it’s small so it’s nearly impossible to photograph well.
Hopefully, my photography skills are improving as I’m learning how to shoot in manual mode.)

Here is what the bathroom looks like today:

Can you see any difference?  Or does it look the same to you?  The difference is much more noticeable in person.

In case you’re wondering…I re-painted it.

powder bath 3.1

The color is called “Galveston Gray” and it’s by Benjamin Moore.

I also added new hand towels and a cute hounds tooth rug I found at good ole Tar-jay.

I changed out the globes on the light fixture (and my husband did a switcharoo for me by trading this fixture for one from a different bathroom in our house — a seemingly simple task that was almost a total fiasco but he saved it in the end and all is well now).

I hate to tell him that the change isn’t all that noticeable and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t worth the hassle, but no sense upsetting him further.

After painting I put everything back where it was before.  Although, now I’m noticing that I really should have lowered the pictures on the wall to the right of the toilet.  I’d better get right on that.  Sometimes taking a picture of a space helps point out the flaws.

styled shelves

Do you like the cow picture that sits on the shelf above the toilet?  I put it there as a bit of a joke because it’s at eye level for men who are standing there going to the bathroom.  I wanted to see if hubby would notice and if he would say anything.

He  noticed it immediately and came out of the bathroom laughing.  I guess there’s nothing like being stared at by a cow chewing it’s cud.

My son (who is not eye level with the cow yet) told me he wasn’t so sure about seeing a cow in the bathroom.  Nonetheless, I left it there and haven’t heard another word about it since!  I wonder what the guests think?

That’s right. I’m the crazy lady with pictures of cows who stare at you while answering Mother Nature in the guest bath.

As for the bathroom makeover, I’m happy with the new paint color.  It feels warmer and more rustic to me now.

And, I’m absolutely in love with the little rug!

I have wanted a rug in here for the longest time but could never find the right thing.

I’m calling this room done for awhile.

I’m sure I’ll see another paint color some day and will paint it on a whim.

This room seems to be like that.

The new color is great…..but really go for a wow factor and paint the vanity. It would be gorgeous in Annie Sloan paris grey, with those gorgeous legs……and the mirror also!
    You can do it!

Love the paint color. I painted my small (window-less) bathroom gray and it looks green. Maybe I’ll try this color.

Beautiful! It really lightens the room. LOVE the rug! Perhaps the guys that visit are a bit embarrassed to mention that a cow was staring at them. 🙂

Julie, I agree with you, those little rooms are the hardest! I really like the color you have in there now. The cow is brilliant. 🙂

Our downstairs has a shower/bath also so there is a shower curtain that makes it seem even more cramped. It is dark and sees lifeless. It needs a paint change too.

I definitely can tell the difference and I love it. I’m painting all of the common areas in our home a new color that isn’t going to be noticeably different than the current color, but it’s so much fresher and cleaner looking. Subtle changes are worth it in my opinion.

I’m so glad you found a color that you like…and being a Galveston fan, I love the name of the paint color. 🙂

Thanks, Sharon! Yes, I like the name of the paint color, too — definitely goes with my Texas-y touches! 🙂 Good luck with your paint projects!

I like the new colour and I think your powder room looks great. That is a nice neutral colour. The cow is the icing on the cake imo. We adore cows around here and I have plans for a few in our bathroom too, well photos not the real ones. I just spent the weekend painting our very plain two piece powder room, ceiling, walls (Gray Owl by BM), trim and door. Now I need to get busy adding accessories.

Nice, but you know the rug would be just a rug except for that cute little red stool. LOL Love it. A small is hard to do!

I did notice a difference in the paint and had to scroll up and down a few times to make sure. I love that color! And I love that little rug. When in doubt…Tar-jay!
