Vintage-look Wooden Crate Tray

I would love to have an old vintage crate sitting on my kitchen counter but I just couldn’t find the right size, shape and color I was looking for.

I like to keep some spices and cooking oils handy next to the stove and I wanted to corral them in a cute vintage wood tray/crate.  But, try as I might the right one remained elusive.

Then I was shopping at the craft store one day and saw the perfect size wooden crate tray that was unfinished.

With my 40% off coupon I snatched it up for just a few dollars and I was on my way!

I thought about doing all sorts of fancy stuff to make it look old and vintage but after a quick coat of stain I decided I was finished.

Maybe at some point I’ll add a little vintage stencil but with everything else that’s going on by the stove, just a coat of stain was all it needed to make me happy!

I didn’t even seal it with wax or polyurethane.

I love projects that take just a few minutes and are super inexpensive!

Even if you don’t love DIY, you can do this vintage-crate tray project!  You only need stain and a paint brush.  It’s the easiest project ever!

Oh…and by the way, someone asked me if this butter dish is by Emma Bridgewater and the answer is YES!  My sweet mother-in-law gave this to me as a birthday gift!

I love the wooden tray. Where did you locate it? The black tray is beautiful too! Was it vintage or a recent store buy and where?

Thanks, Terry! I found it at Michaels. The black tole tray is vintage — I found it at a local antique store.

    Hi Julie,
I love the way you put this all together. Interestingly, I have been trying to come up with a similar display, but just couldn’t figure out exactly how to put it together with things I already have. I have a similar wooden box & knew I wanted to stain it but was hesitatant. You inspired me! That’s my project for today! Thank you for sharing your ideas. Have a great day.

Yay! I’m so happy you were inspired! Funny how that works out sometimes that we think about something and then we read or see something we were just contemplating! So fun!

Some smaller crate ideas are the little crates that were made years ago to hold recording cassettes. I have a couple of those.
