When my husband and I learned we were expecting a girl 10 years ago, we were both excited. We already had a healthy son and the prospect of adding some pink to our household was the icing on the cake.
What I didn’t realize way back then was that having a girl in our midst would bring more than just a few tea parties, dress-up clothes and all things girly. It meant that I would have to learn how to do hair.
Of course, I’ve been doing my own hair for years. I have curled, flat-ironed, and held a hair dryer across these locks for more hours than I care to think about. But, the kind of hair I would be doing for my daughter never even crossed my mind.
The hairstyle I did today for my daughter was relatively simple.
She asked for a small braid at the top of her head that would be pulled in to a high pony tail.
It took about 5 minutes to accomplish today’s look.
But, that’s not always the case. It’s not unusual for her to approach me with new and elaborate types of braids and styles that she wants to try. And, of course, she needs my help.
A few years ago, my daughter discovered a You Tube channel called, Cute Girls Hairstyles. It’s actually a great, informative video site but I have to admit I roll my eyes a little (when my daughter isn’t looking) when she comes to me with a new hairstyle from the site.
Here’s the thing: I don’t like doing hair. I don’t enjoy trying fancy braiding. I am filled with dread with every new hair creation that she is excited about.
While I was fixing my daughter’s hair this morning, I was hit by the fact that this is one of those things for which I need to be grateful.
She recently turned 10 and it won’t be long before she not only doesn’t need my help, she won’t want it.
We are quickly nearly the teen years and things will be different.
So, today, I am choosing to be grateful for the opportunity to braid my daughter’s hair. I am thankful she wants my help and am going to enjoy each day with her even when she asks for something like this:
What are you choosing to be thankful for today?
Hi Julie ~
I have two daughters, and my oldest wanted me to french braid her hair ~ I practiced on her hair for 2 hrs. – and the best part is – she sat there the entire time. This was about 25 years ago.
Now she is 34 and she does her own hair. I miss those days very much.
Have a wonderful day
