It’s official. Christmas decorating is in full swing at my house and I’ll be sharing all of it with you over the next several days.
Today, I’m excited to be kicking things off with so many talented bloggers for the Home for the Holidays Christmas tour.
Thank you to the sweet Sondra Lyn from Sondra Lyn at Home for coordinating this great event!
Each day a handful of blogs will be focusing on different aspects of the holidays — decorating, crafts, recipes, and more. There will be a lot of ideas and inspiration so you’ll be sure to want to visit as many of the blogs as you can. More details and links are at the end of this post.
Today, I’m showing you our “new” room off the kitchen. This past spring, I updated this room from a craft/computer/workout room to a cozy den for watching TV and listening to music. My husband bought a huge television and a new stereo system to make this a little “grown-ups getaway.” It is furnished mostly with furniture we already owned. However, I painted the walls, we had new carpet installed and I decorated it just a little. All the details are in this post.
To be perfectly honest, this room still isn’t complete because my original choices just didn’t feel like me. So, I’ve been tweaking it a bit and now that it’s Christmas time I’m adding more farmhouse style Christmas touches to make it feel cozy.
I am adding lots of red and green and I love it.
Although I admire other colors in Christmas decorating I can’t live without the traditional red and green in my home. I have tried going more neutral and then I inevitably add in the pops of color and I feel like myself again.
My other favorite thing at Christmas (and really any time of year) is plaid. I just cannot resist it.
I love these green plaid pillows on the couch. I love the way the green looks with the brown leather.
My other favorite thing at Christmas? Fresh greenery.
I snipped some branches from the bottom of our fresh tree that’s in the living room. It’s a great alternative to having a tree in this small room.
I clipped a few more tree boughs and put them in a basket that I set on top of the armoire. They are not in water so they will be dry and brittle by the end of the season but they should keep their color. And, since they won’t get touched way up high I shouldn’t notice any needles dropping.
This room is so simple yet it has quickly become our favorite space in our home (aside from our kitchen).
It is small and cozy and the perfect space for getting away from the open spaces of our main living area.
Now I hope you’ll stick with us for the rest of the tour!

So cute!! I love that little truck so much!
I love your cozy room – and your touches of plaid! Thanks so much for participating in this year’s HFTH blog tour!!
What a perfect way to style for Christmas. All the touches of plaid, red and green are so well balanced. SO happy to be on the Home for The Holidays tour with you, Julie.
Merry Christmas. xo
Such a cozy room! That cow!!! I am the same way, I love to see all white or neutral colors but I have to have poops of red and green at Christmas. It’s all very festive and welcoming. Good job! xxii
I love all your holiday decor! That wreath is beautiful. I need to buck up and get one of those! They always look so great! It is fun touring with you this week!
Your Christmas decor is lovely. I love your nutcracker Santa.
Beautiful farmhouse Christmas touches… like the little vignettes – so pretty!
hey julie- I love the adult ‘time out’ room. It seems like the perfect space to get away when necessary and chill.Happy Holidays!
I love the plaid in your space and how it ties everything together. Great choice! I have to admit I’m feeling a little “jelly” over your adult space… With the five g’babies in the family now, our home has become baby central once again. (And I thought that was a one-time deal… Ha!)
I love all your special little touches for Christmas! Plaid is my favorite this year. That cow is incredible!
I love all your decor! Where did you find that darling little boxwood wreath? It is adorable.
Thank you, Maria! The wreath is from Decor Steals. It came with a different ribbon, but I took that one off and added my own for Christmas. You can also find these little boxwoods at Target with the Smith & Hawken things. 🙂
We love your Christmas decor. You have wonderful personal style and eye for detail! And that cow…so adorable! Your vignettes are perfection! So happy we are touring with you this week!
Thank you so much! I can’t wait to see what you two have in store! 🙂
It’s gorgeous-I love everything!
Wow! Fabulous ideas! That cow with the bow is adorable! Never thought about putting ribbons on things I already had around. Such an easy and great idea!
Oh my goodness, Julie … I am loving this farmhouse holiday decor so much! That cow! That truck! Those pillows! It’s all perfect … can’t wait to use the inspiration you’ve given me as I begin decorating for the holidays!
What can I say. I love the red and green, the cut nutcracker in plaid and the cow may go missing. 🙂
Everything looks beautiful Julie!
Julie,
You have inspired me to use fresh greens in my blue striped crock. Like everyone else, I love that black cow with her caught-by-the-camera look. Makes me wonder what she’s been up to. Is the new TV hiding in the white armoire? Great room!
Judith
Your house is beautifully decorated for the holiday; and your photography is really awesome.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful compliment! Taking good pictures is always a challenge! 😉
This looks like the perfect space to curl up with a blanket and a book! I feel the same way about Christmas decor – whenever I try to stay neutral, pops of red always work their way in!

Love your blog! Where oh where did you find the black milk cow??? One like it would be perfect in my house! Merry Christmas to you, Dear!
Thank you, Julia! I found that cow a couple of years ago at Hobby Lobby. I hope they still have it!
Merry Christmas to you, too!
Well Nertz! I tried HobbyLobby.com and they don’t have it listed. Well, if you ever want to sell your cow for a profit, be sure and let me know, OK? Thanks so much for getting back to me. Your blog is a treat!
