We love tacos at our house.
Well, everyone except, my daughter, that is.
But, we live in Texas so she’s going to have to get over that.
We make tacos at least once a week around here and she helps herself to a flour tortilla.
(It’s a well-balanced meal, I know.)
I used to buy Taco Bell’s seasoning packets until I discovered we were out one evening while halfway done browning the meat.
Instead of racing to the grocery store, I found a recipe that tastes almost the same as Taco Bell’s seasoning and I’ve been making it ever since.
My son, the taco lover who requested we have regular “Taco Tuesdays” at home, likes it — he didn’t even notice the difference the first time I made it!
I found the recipe on my iPhone app – Big Oven. It’s called, Taco Bell Seasoning Mix. Clever!
Here’s the recipe:
2 T. flour
2 tsp. chili powder
1 1/2 tsp. dried minced onion
1 1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. paprika
3/4 tsp. beef boullion cube crushed
1/4 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1 dash onion powder
Combine all in small bowl. Prepare taco meat using 1 lb. ground beef and the equivalent of one package of taco seasoning mix. (About 3 T. or half of the mix)
Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water or chicken broth and simmer for 15 minutes.
I save the unused portion of the mix in an old spice jar.
It keeps well, even if we go a few weeks in between taco nights.
If you find the flavor a little too weak at first, add some more of the seasoning to the meat. Sometimes I kick it up a notch with more cayenne pepper and it makes the Hubs happy. He likes it HOT.
My Minnesota-raised taste buds think it’s just fine as is. But, if I have a margarita with it, kicking it up a notch is just fine – ha! Which reminds me…maybe next time I’ll share my husband’s killer recipe for margaritas. They’re out of this world.

Julie.. thanks for sharing this.. so many times I’m out of seasoning.. this would be so perfect to make up in batches and store! Great idea.. xo marlis
That sounds great. I don’t make my own…I buy the McCormick’s Taco Seasoning in a big container because we make them so often too. I like the idea of making my own mostly to control the salt. Sometimes, I think the mix is too salty. Wouldn’t that make a cute gift for neighbors?
Got to try this! Thanks Julie! Sharing on FB later next week. xoxo
