Back to School Shopping

The kids made it back to school yesterday.  And, although I was looking forward to having the house to myself and getting my own chores done the day was a little bittersweet.

(The kids weren’t really going to school in the dark…it just looks that way!)

My oldest (on the left) started Intermediate school and it was a very emotional day for me! It was our first year being in a carpool (we have always been able to walk to elementary school) and the first year I have not walked him in to the building on the first day to get a picture of him with his teacher. It was a big change.  In addition, I have heard some not-so-positive things about his home room/math teacher so I think I had bigger nerves than he did!  Sometimes it’s so hard being a parent!

With the big move to Intermediate school it means he now has a locker.  I heard through some other moms that it was hard to fit a backpack into their small lockers so they recommended going without one.  So yesterday we discovered that juggling his stuff is going to be a challenge without a backpack.  We bought him a large binder with a zipper that he can bring back and forth to school (recommended by the teachers) but when it came to his lunch, a snack and a water bottle I discovered that what we had just didn’t cut it.  We needed to find a lunchbox that could accommodate his lunch, a snack and a water bottle.  So, I checked out Target right after I drove carpool to see what they had.

Apparently, everyone but me bought a new lunch box for school because there wasn’t much left except Superman and Sponge Bob lunch boxes.  Not cool.

So, when I got home, I logged on to PB Teen (because he’s too grown up now for Pottery Barn Kids, sniff, sniff.)  After browsing I decided that I’d better let him shop when he got home to pick out what he likes. At first he found this:

But when we tried to put it in our cart we discovered it was sold out.  So, then he chose this:

But he couldn’t decide whether or not it would be considered cool to get his name embroidered on it.  And, if so, what color?  Then, as he was thinking about that, he asked me if I could find any other lunchboxes that he might like.  So, again, I hit the web this time googling “lunchboxes.”  Did you know there is a site called “lunchboxes.com“?  You can browse kids lunchboxes and lunchboxes for everyone.  There are 43 different lunchboxes for everyone. Amazing.

LLBean has lunchboxes, so does Amazon, The Container Store, all the big box stores websites and more.   You can even find “earth friendly” lunch boxes that help you pack nutritious and environmentally friendly lunches.  I have browsed and browsed and I’ve come to the conclusion that my son does not need to know about the endless selection of lunchboxes available.  There is such a thing as too many choices.  I think I’ll tell him, it’s either a Superman lunchbox or the PB teen one.  All the others are for girls.
