It’s funny how one thing can start an entire domino effect turning one small project in to a huge one.
That’s what’s kind of happening at my house right now.
My husband and I started talking about the need to replace our double ovens, microwave and cooktop and now we’re talking about a kitchen RENOVATION!
What?!
If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know that I would absolutely die to be able to paint my kitchen cabinets. So the talk of doing some renovating is pretty darn exciting for me!
But, I’m also a little cautious about getting too excited because I don’t really know how far “renovating” for us will really go. In fact, the word, “renovation” is probably taking things a little too far. I’d say we’re considering a small facelift at this point.
Right now we’re considering several things: Painting and/or staining, cabinet re-configuration, new lighting, changing up the island and, of course – where it all started — new appliances. Cost will definitely be a factor in our decision making process.
I know my kitchen is not horrible, in fact, it’s a very beautiful kitchen. Since it’s not a total gut job and it’s not totally outdated you may be wondering why we’re considering a small reno project.
See the double ovens and the microwave in the picture below?
I have disliked that set-up since before we ever bought the house.
I am not a tall person — just average — I am 5’5″ tall. The microwave at this height is difficult and frustrating to use and I think it’s at a dangerous height for the kids even with a step stool.
As for the ovens…the top one is the perfect height but the lower one is way too low. In addition, the cabinet above the microwave is so high we don’t even use it. Correction, we have old phone books in there that have not been touched since who knows when.
So…when the ovens started making their decline, we started looking at replacing them and while we started looking we thought that maybe now was the time to reconfigure this area to make it more user/family friendly.
The reconfiguration talking starting impacting the island — maybe we should move the microwave to the island? We have the room to extend the island and we already have electrical there so why not bump it out and add a new counter top? While we’re extending the island, maybe we should add seating and a place to put a recycling container? And, while we’re at the island, let’s add some pendant lights overhead. I’m tired of turning every light in the kitchen on to see what I’m doing. See where I’m going with this? It’s a giant snowball.
This week I had a kitchen designer come to the house to talk about what we could do to the space.
It’s a dangerous thing having a designer come visit. It’s kind of like test-driving a new car. They have all kinds of ideas you never even thought of! Lord, have mercy!
After she left I started thinking my kitchen could look like this one from For the Love of a House blog:
Or this one shared at Hooked on Houses and inspired by my all-time favorite movie house, “Something’s Gotta Give”:
Oh my gosh! I could just DIE!
I don’t know where all of this is going to lead, but I’m seriously trying to contain myself because the Mr. isn’t totally on board with all this daydreaming and planning yet. Oh, if he only knew how quickly my mind can wander when it comes to spiffing up our digs! lol
I’ll keep you posted on what’s to come. And, feel free to follow my Kitchens Pinterest board as I keep adding pretty new ideas to it! I’ve got a lot of dreaming to do!
Have a great weekend!

Oh I can’t wait to see what you do!!
So exciting! We completely renovated our 1965 kitchen a couple of years ago. You can look on my blog to see the transformation. Just search kitchen remodel…the only thing I would have done differently is stainless appliances but my hubs loves black so he got his way…not worth the fight considering everything else we did.
How fun and scary! I love the cabinets in your dream kitchens. I can’t wait to see what you decide.
I agree Stephanie — it is a little scary! I don’t want to screw anything up!
I have a big flat island and while it’s good for projects it tends to be a catch-all *esp. for the Hubs
Oh yes, isn’t that true? My island is a bit of a catch-all too. I don’t think there is a day that goes by that I don’t have to clear someone’s stuff off of there to start cooking. Too much space has its drawbacks too!
Well at least Mr. has one foot in the boat if he isn’t totally on board. My hubby believes in doing NOTHING to a house until time to move. I have only moved 3 times since being married to him. Sigh.
Your husband sounds a lot like my dad! My dad never wanted to improve anything unless it was broken. My mom ended up saving some money from her job so she could make some updates to the house they lived in for more than 35 years. She put in hardwood floors, a beautiful french door and a bay window – to name a few. My dad ended up loving her changes! Who would have guessed?!
I agree, your kitchen is beautiful; however, whenever I see a kitchen like the one in the movie, “Something’s Gotta Give”…I yearn for a white kitchen…how exciting…it will look fabulous!
Juie,
Hi from New Zealand. The second photo of the kitchen with the bookcase is just like my kitchen, except the drawer pulls and knobs were black. I say my kitchen but sorry to say it is no longer mine. We sold our house so have to start all over again! My husband is a carpenter/joiner and I waited for ever to get my dream kitchen. Hopefully in my next house he will be a bit quicker!!
Best wishes with your kitchen updates! Your kitchen is beautiful!
Oh I love to dream too. Can’t wait to see what you do. Hugs, marty
Oh I know your turmoil. I am in the middle of a gutted kitchen. It all started with replacing the fridge. Now my kitchen was outdated and something had to give with my honey oak cabinets. Either restain or paint. But other things weren’t quite right either. We too started out with a designer just for ideas. Haha. Well, within the next two months I should have the kitchen of my dreams. Not the one that came with this builder’s plans. Mine. Planned from top to bottom with my ideas and needs. That first kitchen was a dream 24 years ago. It served me well raising my two beautiful girls and now it’s being redone for the next phase of my life. Grown girls, future son in laws, and future grand babies. I love the house and don’t plan to move. My new dream kitchen is a white kitchen with a black distressed island. So excited. I say go for it.
Oooh, you must be so excited! You must share pictures when it’s finished! Thanks so much for your encouragement!
Julie
We call that “If You Give A Mouse a Cookie” because if you move an island then you have get a new floor and then….I think your kitchen is pretty but sure understand wanting better. Have fun feeding the mouse.
