Crafting with Kids {Flip Flops}

I have crafted with my kids since they were old enough to hold a crayon.

We would paint, paste, bake, decorate cookies and create all kinds of things to pass the time together.

Sometimes it got messy.

(Okay, that really isn’t a crafting mess, but I couldn’t resist sharing this picture from way back when!)

My 12-year-old son isn’t that interested in crafting anymore but, my 9-year-old daughter is.
In fact, I think she’s a craft blogger in the making.

This summer, we thought it would be fun to work together on a weekly Crafting with Kids post here on Lilacs & Longhorns.  It’s not only something we can do together this summer, but we’re hoping it might inspire you to craft with your own kids or your grandchildren.  We love it and think it’s fun!

This week, when we were at the craft store, my daughter saw some plain flip flops and decided she wanted to jazz them up with some flowers.

DIY flip flops

It’s a simple, 5-minute project but there is a small trick to it.  You must buy the right glue.

We found this glue at the hardware store but you can also find it in craft stores.  And, it’s not the only brand that will work.  You’re looking for a flexible glue that works on plastic.  Hot glue does not work!  Your flowers and other embellishments will pop right off when you put on your shoes, so be sure to look for this or a urethane glue.

Other than that, it’s as easy as pie.  Just snip the flowers off the stems, and glue them on to the shoes.  We used clothespins to hold them down for 24 hours before wearing them.

    Gotta love those flip flops, so cute with colorful flowers on them. Great to know about the glue, thanks for tip, didn’t know there was special glue like that. I’ll be looking for it. I bought a pair of flip flops last year somewhere with some flowers on them. Think I’d like to make my own. Few years ago I tore strips from patriotic fabric to tie onto a pair of flip flops for July 4th. they turned out cute but took me while to get used to how the strips felt. kinda tickled. Still have them somewhere I hope. Happy summer days

I love hearing from you! Thank you so much for your comment!
