When we built our pool five years ago, it became quickly apparent that we didn’t have a good place to hang up wet towels after swimming. They either landed on the pool deck or on the backs of chairs and it made me crazy.
The problem was, we have a stucco house and my husband was wary of affixing anything to the walls. Screws or nails in stucco can let in unwanted rain and moisture and that would be bad.
I was determined to come up with an easy solution for hanging up towels by the pool and I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a free-standing towel hanger like the ones I had seen in catalogs.
Hello 4 x 4 cedar posts with hooks!
We installed our towel hanger pre-blogging days so I don’t have a picture tutorial, but it really isn’t necessary. It’s such and easy project and it doesn’t take a lot of time – or money.
Materials:
- 4 x 4 cedar post
- Concrete mix + water
- Hooks & screws (I bought mine from Hobby Lobby)
Tutorial:
- Dig a hole approximately 12-18 inches deep
- Insert post
- Fill remaining hole with wet concrete
- Add hooks to the post
I used these wide “butterfly” hooks so I can hang several towels per hook if necessary.
We even added a bottle cap opener – which we rarely use – but is kind of a fun addition.
I used to have an outdoor clock/thermometer on the post, but I recently replaced it with a hanging flower basket. The clock stopped working and was looking pretty sun-beaten so it was time for a change. I opted to do something decorative instead of adding more hooks.
I love having an extra place to hang flowers.
Oh…if you decide to do something like this, it’s a good idea to hang the hooks at various heights so family members of all ages and sizes can reach to grab and put their towels away. Just make sure they’re not hung too low so they drag on the ground.
Keeping a basket full of fresh, dry towels is a nice idea, too. It helps keep wet bodies from trekking water in to the house as they look to dry off.
The pool is still a little too cool for me to jump in but my kids have been swimming and our towel hanger is back in business for the season.
Here’s to a fun summer season!
Thanks for stopping by!
That’s a great idea! It looks really nice.
What a great idea and so pretty too!
Excellent idea! Towels on chairs make me crazy , suits, too & this could solve both.
Such a great idea! The towels everywhere always drove me crazy too. Your pool and backyard looks gorgeous!! Back in the day I would let them all start swimming when the water got to 58, hard to believe now. I would make them all hot cocoa when they got out, lol!
