I am a total sucker for a beautiful garden.
Each and every spring I vow that I won’t go crazy at the garden centers. And every year, I break that vow.
This year I was certain it was going to be different.
Even though I lost a lot of plants throughout the year due to the colder-than average winter and the extreme heat and dry drought conditions I decided I wasn’t going to risk losing my time and money on costly replacements.
Then, we decided to make an investment. We updated our sprinkler system and put in drip irrigation in all of our beds. (We did not DIY this, we hired professionals.)
We live on a half acre of land and have a lot of beds. It seemed like the best thing to do given our landscaping had outgrown the system put in when the house was built 14 years ago.
That investment gave me hope and off I went to my local garden centers and got busy. Really busy.
I have planted new mixed containers. I have ripped out dead shrubs and put in new. I have cut down overgrown vines and cleared entire spaces making way for new garden plans. I have spent hours and hours in the yard and it is finally starting to show the fruits of my labor.
We just got some much-needed rain and things are about as green as they ever get here in North Texas.
I wish things would stay looking this lush and beautiful all summer, but the oppressive heat makes it almost impossible.
Even so, I’m encouraged by what’s blooming and growing and the current state of things around here.
I’m especially excited about this “new” space in the yard. This area was completely overgrown with vines, perennials, herbs and a myriad of plants that went totally crazy.
I ripped it all out, cleared out all the weeds and built the boxes myself so my herbs and tomatoes will be in a nice, neat space with room to walk around.
It doesn’t look like much now, but when the seeds sprout and the small plants grow, I’m hoping it will be a productive little kitchen garden.
I also tackled another big project that my kids love…I made a little fire pit area with some flagstone we moved to make way for a new sidewalk.
I’m not ready to do a total reveal yet, but we did have a brat and weenie roast out here!
I’d love to say I’m finished in the yard, but if you like to putter in the yard, you know that it’s never really done.
I still have a few more things to plant and then I’ll sit back relax a little bit.
Until then, you can find me digging in the dirt.
What about you? Is the garden beckoning you?
Thanks for stopping by today!

Your flowers are incredibly beautiful. I love yellow roses. We plant tomatoes every year and hopefully they’ll do well this year. Last year we got too much rain. Thanks for sharing your lovely garden.
That’s my kind of work you have going on now!! Everything looks pretty already. Thank goodness for our rain and praying for more.
