Dresser Makeover and a Question

A few weeks ago, I tackled a room makeover for my soon-to-be-12-year-old son’s room.

We hadn’t done much in there and his room really was a hodge-podge of furniture that was waiting to be made-over.

As you may recall, I shared some of my pre-teen boys room makeover ideas here.

Here’s the idea board I came up with to get us started and to keep us on track:

preteen boys room

The room is 90% done, but I haven’t shared much about it, until today.

First up, his dresser makeover.

I haven’t shared it because I’m still not sure it’s really done.  I’ll explain why in a minute.

First, let me show you the before:

It’s your run-of-the-mill Cargo Kids dresser except I painted the pulls red. (You’ll notice the metal pulls on top…these are the new ones I put on and was trying them out to see if we liked them. I was too lazy to take them off for the before picture!)

We bought the dresser on Craig’s list about 5 years ago and it was part of a bunk bed set.

I had every intention of doing a complete makeover on it but both my husband and my son loved it the way it was.

So, I simply sanded it down, re-oiled it and painted the very dirty pulls to match his more boyish room.

I didn’t love it, but he did so I called it a day.

Here’s what it looks like today:

It looks so much better, don’t you think?!

But, here’s my question.  See this?

ring around pulls

There’s a little “ring” around many of the pulls.

This is the reason I never changed the pulls before.

I sanded and sanded the dresser drawers and could never get rid of some of these light spots.

I had hoped that if I added a little extra stain to those areas that I could make them less noticeable.

It didn’t work.

I bought the biggest pulls I could find that might help cover that area.

drawer with pulls

They helped, but they don’t cover it all.

I love the mix of stain and paint on this piece, so I’m hesitant to paint over the stained drawers.

And, the stain goes really well with his bed.

So, what to do?!

Keep it as is and just pretend I don’t see the little rings or do something different?

The perfectionist in me feels the need to fix this problem.

I’ve thought about painting stripes down the front that might cover up the spots I don’t like but I’m afraid it will be too busy.

I’ve thought about using chalkboard paint on the drawer fronts and covering the stain.

I’ve also thought about just painting the whole piece the same color blue (it’s Artissimo Blue by Miss Mustard Seed, by the way and I love it in his room!).

What are you ideas?

I would love to hear them!

I LOVE the combo of natural stain and blue paint. However, I see what you mean. Personally, I would be able to live w/ it and tell myself it gives the piece character. Sorry I don’t have better advice for you!

Hi Julie, I totally agree with Stephanie. I also see why it might bug you but I think anything you do might be too busy or totally change the way it looks. I could live with it thinking those “stains” just add interest to it. What does your son think?

  3. Since your son likes it as it is, I say don’t paint any more of it. It looks really good as it is. The reason those areas are lighter is that the wood was hiding under the old drawer pulls. The wood darkens with age and light exposure. If it was me, I would leave it for a year and see if it still looks different. That wood may just darken with light exposure to match, or mostly match, the rest of the drawer fronts. There really isn’t any hurry.

I see what you mean and I think it looks fine as it is BUT if it bothers you, could you “frame” the pulls with the same blue as you did the trim? Or you could use a black paint to make the pulls look larger. Does your son like it as is? If he does I wouldn’t do anything but those were just thoughts.

  5. It looks very nice. You did a great job. It’s hardly noticeable but if it will bother you, do what you have to do. I agree with the above comment, if your son is happy with it…..DONE.

I love this dresser! I don’t think I would have ever noticed the light spots because the overall look is so fab. But I get it, if it’s going to bug you . . . . . I wonder if you could find something to create a sort of backplate that would fit between the drawer and the pull, the right size to cover the spot? I realize while I’m typing how nuts that sounds, because those pulls are really great looking. Whatever you do, the room looks like it’s going to be amazing!
