Fall Mantel 2013

I have a confession to make.

Growing up in Minnesota I didn’t really like fall that much.

In fact, I usually dreaded it.
I didn’t want fall to arrive because it meant the end to an already short summer.

Goodbye warm temperatures and hello long, long winter.

Sure, I thought the fall colors were spectacular.

Yes, I liked going to pick out a pumpkin at the farmer’s market and going to the apple orchard for fresh-made apple pies.

But, I just wanted summer to rewind and play itself out all over again so I didn’t enjoy the fullness and beauty that fall had to offer.

Since moving to Texas almost 20 years ago, I began to fully appreciate fall and now welcome it with open arms.

I now long for those gorgeous Minnesota fall displays that don’t happen here in North Texas.

I remember and wish for the spectacular colors of the leaves changing in unison.

I’m wistful about visits to the apple orchard and choosing pumpkins that are cold to the touch when you pick them up.

I remember with fondness wearing sweaters and jackets and attending cold football games.

Since Texas doesn’t have the fall color I’m longing for, I make it myself with seasonal decorating.

While others may be drawn towards the muted colors, I always add touches of orange and yellow.

I pick up acorns and pine cones off the ground to add them to fall displays savoring all that nature has to offer.

It helps me feel like fall and gets me in the mood for the change of seasons that will eventually happen here.

Fall in Texas is different than where I grew up.  It can be hot and not very pretty at times.

But, even one spectacular tree is enough beauty for me to enjoy.

Here’s to wishing you a delightful fall season wherever you are!

  1. I bet you do long for those Minnesota Fall days. There’s a surprising difference even between here and Oklahoma City. It is definitely a little cooler and a little more colorful there. And that’s not saying too much!

Your mantel looks great. I’m going to work on mine today. :)

Luv the mantel… the twigs with the Fall leaves attached.
My move was NY to Florida… big change. Like you, I miss the changing of the leaves… the difference in the season…
But not the long cold days and nights… oh no. Not so much.

  6. Very pretty mantle. The blues are great. I’m sending you some **fall thoughts” from Southwest Virginia where we have blue skies and nights already creeping into the 40’s.
