It seems like just a few years ago I was picking out fabrics for a baby boy’s nursery.
Then, just a few short weeks later (not really) we were moving my son upstairs to a big boy room.
Then, after a blink of an eye, he told me his room was too baby-ish and we tweaked it to be fit for a tween boy.
Yesterday, my son came to me and told me that he wants an update to his room.
Again.
He’s going in to sixth grade and he tells me he’s a pre-teen now.
Which means he needs a cooler, hangout space.
Pre-teen?! What?!
GAH!
How and when did this happen?!
I haven’t shown you the entirety of my son’s room before. Mostly because it’s usually a jumbled mess.
Legos and various stuff on the floor.
Shoes here and there.
Odds and ends on his desk and bedside table.
Things that are still there, yet this “pre-teen” wants a cooler, more masculine room update.
So, this momma played around a little bit finding inspiration for my son’s room…taking in to consideration that he likes his current color scheme and still isn’t quite sure about moving from bunk beds to a larger, queen bed.
If he moves to a larger bed I’ll get him a new comforter.
I will also paint and/or stain some of his existing furniture…something that has needed to be done since we bought his bunk beds on Craig’s List but I just wasn’t quite sure what to do to make it all work together.
He also wants a cool chair for sitting and jamming on his guitar and he needs a new chair for his desk.
The wall color will be updated as well. It is currently beige and we want to go with some shade of gray.
I think it’s hard finding good inspiration for bigger boys rooms so it takes a little snooping around.
I found many things at PBTeen, World Market, Overstock, as well as some items on Etsy and IKEA. I also have a Kids Rooms board on Pinterest that I started awhile back but many of those rooms are for the younger set.
We haven’t settled on a final idea board yet, but we’re getting there.
I think it’s fun to bring my kids in on the process of re-doing their rooms. After all, it is their space and they have to live there!
My daughter and I had so much fun when we re-did her tween girl’s room last year.
It’s a lot of work, but it’s also so rewarding when they get excited about their new space.
Happy Thursday everyone and thank you for reading!
I love your vision…it is going to be an awesome room for your son!!
What a great room that is gonna be. I love all your inspiration ideas. Can’t wait to see it all done- xo Diana
I’m going through a similar thing with my 11 year old. He always lets me do whatever I want in his room but he has insisted on light blue walls this time. I’m searching for the right blue tho’, perhaps with a little grey in it. I’ve got a king single bed for him plus a “single-sized” day bed that I need to decorate up. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
You’re right, there’s not as much design inspiration for older boys’ rooms, but I really like the moodboards you’ve created. Your daughter’s room looked beautiful when you did that last year, so I’m sure this one will be equally as great! Look forward to watching the progress.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with! It won’t be long before I’ll need to redo my son’s room *sniff*
