Defining My Design Style

I was browsing some of my favorite blogs this morning and saw this post about defining your own design style over at The Cottage Mix.

I thought it was a fun post and it got me inspired to share my own design style.

It’s not always easy to define but — as Lauren at TCM said – pictures usually say it all.

I love cozy, casual rooms that have lots of texture and color.  Blue is definitely my favorite.

I also love red.  And quilts.

I like a mix of old and new.

And I love a room that functions well while still being pretty.

I like clean lines but still like a little frill here and there.  (Like the cute turned legs on the couch above.)  And, I always, always love flowers — you can never go wrong with a hydrangea.

I would define my style as farmhouse and traditional and a little bit cottagey (I know, “cottagey” is not a real word).  Since getting married I need to give a nod to ranch living to include my husband’s taste.  (I’ve mentioned before that he likes cowhides and leather.)

I think a cowhide can look beautiful in a space.

Antlers can be cool, too.

In the bedroom, I love a well-made bed.  By that I mean crisp white or ivory cotton sheets, a fluffy down comforter, and layers of blankets and pillows.  If I could have ruffles on my bed (like the one shown below) without offending my husband I would be all over it!

Don’t get me started on gingham and buffalo checks!

They make me swoon.

I think I could go on forever sharing pictures that inpsire my design style but that’s why there’s Pinterest!

I don’t think I can give a single label to my design style but if I could sum it up in a couple of words they would describe a feeling I want to evoke as opposed to an actual style.  I want my house to be warm, welcoming, cozy and inviting.

To achieve that, I think this rule is king:

It makes me think of what Oprah and Nate Berkus say about the home;  your home should rise up to greet you.

To me, that means you should be surrounded by things you love, things that comfort you and make you feel good to be there.   It’s not about finding the perfection you see in magazines or on Pinterest but finding what’s perfect for you.
