Tulips Bulbs in Mason Jars {Mason Jar Monday}

It just hit me today that Easter is only five weeks away!  Here I was thinking it was way too soon to start decorating for Easter and it turns out that it isn’t!

I really enjoy bringing touches of the Easter season to my home — especially since I traveled to Germany for the first time almost a decade ago.  The Germans really know how to create a simple, and beautiful Easter display.  They don’t go overboard and crazy, but it seems to be just right and so gorgeous.

So, for today’s monthly edition of Mason Jar Monday, I thought it would be fun to create something simple that reminds me of Germany.

When I think of Easter in Germany, I think of fresh flowers. It seems like they have vibrant and simple arrangements ranging from a single flower in a vase, to a big, beautiful bunch.

I use Mason jars as vases a lot, but this time I wanted to try something different. I decided it would be fun to try planting tulip bulbs in Mason jars — the flowers last longer this way!

I made a few in different sizes and grouped them with some little bunny figurines.

To be perfectly honest, these will make their final home all lined up on my kitchen window sill.  But, we are getting some much-needed rain here so it’s too dark in the house to make that photo work today!

You might have noticed I put some moss in the jar on the left but didn’t in the small jar on the right.  I liked both looks and decided to show you the jar two ways.  Also, the Mason jar on the left is larger and green and the one on the right is small and clear.  Either way it works and I think they’re so cute!

And, the presence of fresh flowers definitely reminds me of those simple, yet beautiful German Easter displays I recall from my travels.

Creating this look is so simple.

Materials:

  • Mason jar
  • potting soil
  • tulip bulb
  • moss

Directions:

I bought my tulips already growing with flower buds at Trader Joe’s.  They had been forced in water, so I simply took them out of the water and planted them.   Here are some links for growing tulips:

    I think the tulips in mason jars will look great lined up on your kitchen windowsill. Trader Joe’s is on my list for the next day or two. Hope I can find some pretty tulips…
