Garbage Bars – Don’t Let the Name Fool You!

This summer, my kids and I decided that we would make something together every Monday.  It could be a craft or a recipe.  So far, we’ve been opting to make our favorite recipes because we love the edible results!

One of my kids favorites is this recipe for “Garbage Bars.” We made them together and have been happily nibbling ever since!

The name may not sound appetizing, but trust me, it’s a favorite among both kids and grown-ups.  And, it helps you clean out your pantry, too!

Here’s the recipe:

3/4 c. sugar

3/4 c. white Caro syrup

1 c. peanut butter

1 c. chocolate chips

4 c. cereal

In a large sauce pan bring the sugar and Caro syrup to a full boil.  Take off heat.

Add 1 c. peanut butter, stir and then quickly add 4 cups cereal of any type.

Mix quickly and spread into a 9 x 13 pan.

Melt the chocolate chips and spread over the top of the cereal mixture.  Enjoy!

Tip:  Have all of your ingredients measured and ready to go before you begin.  Once the sugar/Caro mixture is boiling and taken off the heat you need to work quickly as it will begin to set.  Quickly stir in the peanut butter and then pour in the cereal and mix.

Why are they called “garbage” bars?  Because you can use cereals that might otherwise end up in the trash.  Did you buy a box of cereal that went stale?  Use them in this recipe!  Do you  have a box of cereal that no one really likes?  Use it in this recipe!

I find it’s best to used puffed cereals, Chex cereals or flakes — not something like Shredded Wheat or Grape Nuts.

No matter what cereal you use they are yummy every time!  We love them!
