Milk Paint and Indecision

A couple of weeks ago I saw this gorgeous painted secretary at Miss Mustard Seed.  It is painted her new "Artissimo" color in her milk paint line.

Posted at Miss Mustard Seed

Let me tell you, it had me at "hello."

Gorgeous!

If you've been hanging around here for any time at all, you know I love blue.

I have just a few things...

painted blue...

So, when I saw Artissimo Blue milk paint, I knew I wanted to try it.

You see, I have this table in my foyer that I really like, but it blends right in to all the stained wood in my home.

I thought the dark blue might accent well with the wood and would give it just the right pop to stand out.

The catch is, I don't want to cover the beautiful burled wood.

So I was thinking about doing something like this:

Domestically Speaking

Leaving the burled wood as is and painting the exterior in Artissimo.

I ordered the paint and now I'm getting a little nervous!

Does this ever happen to you?

If you ask me, the space is crying for some paint.

So, what do you think?

Should I go for it?!

Just writing about it is giving me a little more confidence.

It also helps to gaze at this piece.  I just LOVE this dark blue!

While I'm mulling it over, don't forget that the "Getting Creative at Home" blog tour is still going strong!

As much as I love painted pieces I would be afraid to paint the burled wood piece. Burled wood is sos hard to come by anymore and SO expensive that it will lose it's value if you paint it. If that doesn't matter I say go for it. Or...maybe you have another piece in hiding you could paint? Good luck- You'll know what's the right thing to do...xo Diana

Thanks, Diana! Maybe I'll keep looking for something on Craig's list. I just can't get totally comfortable with painting it.

Yes I agree I would hate to paint the burled wood piece. Love the color of blue that you have in your home. Visiting from the blog tour.

Yes...that burled wood is what's making me hesitate! The piece is not in great shape. It's a former wash stand that is missing some pieces. There are holes in the marble where the top used to be so that's what makes me think it might be okay to paint. Thanks for weighing in!

It is a nice piece! You could very well do a two tone look. If you aren't 100 percent happy with the piece where it is, then it is time to try something different. Go for it!

I have a piece similar to that without the stone top. I'm not painting mine and you know I paint almost everything. If you want a pop of that blue there paint the mirror.

Great suggestion, Kim! I'm so on the fence about this because this is an old wash stand that is missing parts so it's not a great quality piece. But, like you, am not sure it is something that should be painted. Love the idea of the mirror, though.

Ok girl, you know I'm all about the painted furniture, but I say no on this one. It's just too neat of a piece! Hugs! Claire

No no no.. that piece is gorgeous and you might just regret that decision. Maybe another piece there and move that gorgeous piece elsewhere? Add a tassel to the drawer pull for a pop of color? LOL.. marlis

NOOOOO, please don't paint this beautiful piece! The wood is so beautiful, I would hate for you to cover it up. It is a gorgeous piece of furniture!

I love that secretary (and I've been looking for somehting like it!) BUT the wood in that piece is so beautiful I would hate to cover it up or decrease the value.

Also - I agree w/ Kim. If the mirror isn't an expensive one I would go w/ that. You have a lot of different wood tones going on there and the mirror might give you the pop you want.

Go for it. Do the two toned look I think you will love it.

The piece is gorgeous.....I am not sure if you painted it, you may have that "painter's remorse"...If you do not like the piece in that area because it is too close to the newel post which is the same color, is there another area in the house that this piece could be re-located...and then you can paint another piece in that gorgeous color...you are right, that color would be beautiful next to the staircase area...

I agree about not painting it - perhaps paint another piece of furniture to put there, or as someone else suggested; a mirror or picture frame. Gorgeous colour though - would probably look great on anything! I'm a blue girl too!

I love painted furniture but I also love a beautiful wood finish and that piece has a beautiful finish. I would leave it as it is and maybe add more color with a picture instead of a mirror. I love your house and blog.
